Kitchen and Jones take on New Star Higher Income
Henderson’s Graham Kitchen & Andrew Jones have taken on the management of the New Star Higher Income fund, replacing Toby Thompson. The change follows Henderson’s acquisition of New Star, which was announced in January and completed on 9th April. It is believed Thompson will not be joining Henderson. The fund was once rated four stars by Bestinvest but performance took a turn for the worse in recent years, harmed by an overweight to banks. As a result we removed the fund from our buylist in 2007.
Recommendation
Kitchen and Jones have spent three and a half years as joint managers of the Henderson UK Equity and Henderson UK Growth & Income funds. They have underperformed on both during their tenure and hence do not qualify for a Bestinvest rating at present. Our recommended alternatives in the UK Equity Income sector include Artemis Income, Rensburg UK Equity Income, Standard Life Equity High Income and Threadneedle UK Equity Income.
