Anthony Bolton – To manage new China fund by Adrian Lowcock

Today, Fidelity announced that their legendary fund manager, Anthony Bolton, will relocate to Hong Kong to manage a new fund dedicated to investing in China and China related opportunities. The new fund is expected to be launched at the end of March 2010.

Anthony Bolton

Anthony Bolton earned his reputation for managing the Fidelity Special Situations Fund from its launch in December 1979 until the end of 2007. During which time, the fund achieved an annualised return of 19.5% (compared to 13.5% for the FTSE All-Share Index). During his tenure, £1,000 invested in the fund at launch grew in value to £148,200.

Fidelity in China

Fidelity has a strong presence in the Asia Pacific region. It has over 16 years experience investing in China, with a dedicated team of three portfolio managers currently managing Chinese equity funds, supported by five research analysts and three equity traders.

Our view

Whilst Anthony Bolton has an exceptional reputation managing money in the UK, he does not have any identifiable track record in China. However, his knowledge and experience are well documented and we believe he will be a valuable addition to the team.

Investors wishing to access China can do so through recommended funds such as First State Greater China Growth. The Fund is managed by Martin Lau who has over 11 years experience in the region and a Bestinvest MRI of 98.9% over that time.
