Overview of FIDELITY UK SMALLER COMPANIES A

This is the retail version of an institutional mandate which manager Alex Wright has been running since 2008. The fund targets long term capital growth by investing primarily in smaller UK equities, though some larger and overseas companies may also be included. The manager looks for companies that have underperformed but have recovery potential and where further downside is limited. He has achieved a strong track record during his tenure on the existing fund.

Investment process

The manager looks for stocks which have gone through a period of underperformance as he believes the market is inefficient at pricing such companies. He likes shares where there is little or no value ascribed to growth opportunities or change potential, but that also offer limited further downside. Such downside protection may be achieved through asset backing, high barriers to entry, low institutional ownership or low valuation in comparison to history. The manager will aim to balance the portfolio between companies at different stages of the recovery process.
