Fund manager John Bennett has over 20 years’ experience running European equity funds, both at Henderson and previous employer GAM. Bennett’s style and the fund’s bias to large companies typically provide a degree of protection from falling markets, making the fund suitable for core European equity exposure. The fund was originally awarded a 5 star rating, but was downgraded in 2010 when the resignation of Roger Guy, Gartmore's Head of European Equities, cast a shadow over the team. However, following Gartmore's acquisition by Henderson in 2011, Bennett now benefits from the support of Henderson's European team.
The Manager invests in a portfolio of shares which he believes have unrecognised potential for above average capital returns and are thus under appreciated by the market. The Fund’s investments may include a broad range of stocks from predominantly large companies although medium to smaller company shares may also be considered and such stocks are ones in which the Manager believes have significant unrecognised growth potential. In terms of individual company analysis the manager places great emphasis on good management and sound earnings growth. In particular he targets companies with clean accounts and good records of producing superior returns on their invested capital base.
