Central banks and governments are falling over themselves to bail out the financial system. The Paulson plan will inject $700bn into banks on top of the $500bn of bailouts already made. In the UK and mainland Europe governments have taken emergency action on banks and building societies-forcing mergers and injecting capital.

I was amused by a comment a little while ago by a lady who, when asked to comment on market volatility, said ‘I’ve never seen anything like this since I began trading three months ago’. With no amusement at all I can tell you I have never seen anything like this in over 20 years of investing.

Last Sunday the US Treasury rescued the two largest issuers of mortgage backed paper, known as Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. The share capital of these entities, like Northern Rock, was effectively wiped out.

According to IMF estimates, the dollar’s real effective exchange rate fell 34% between February 2002 and May 2008. Due to low real interest rates and a ballooning trade deficit, the world has been happy to continue selling dollars, largely by borrowing or using dollars to invest elsewhere.

On 6th April the ISA & PEP rules changed. The annual ISA allowance increased to £7,200, PEPs have become Stocks and Shares ISAs and you can now also transfer Cash ISAs into Stocks and Shares ISAs.
