Bestinvest’s fund research process is a mix of quantitative data analysis and qualitative investigation. Our 13-strong research team compiles monthly data on more than 85,000 funds and conducts more than 400 manager meetings each year. From this twin approach our experienced analysts find those funds and managers with the most rigorous and proven investment process for the long-term benefit of our clients.

The success of our fund selection has a direct impact on the value of your portfolio so we believe in recruiting highly qualified, specialist staff who can focus on finding the best funds without any distractions. At Bestinvest we have a dedicated team, one of the largest in the country, who do nothing but research funds.

The team maintains a proprietary database that monitors thousands of funds and, more importantly, the managers that run them. There’s no point investing in a top-performing fund if the manager behind its success has moved on. Conversely a poor performer can often be rejuvenated if taken over by a talented manager.

Fund managers change jobs every five years or so, so keeping tabs on them is crucial. We follow managers from company to company, stitching their performance histories together to create track records that in some cases go back more than 30 years. The best managers have the talent to repeat their success.

We use the track record numbers to carry out statistical analysis of the managers across their careers. We look at how they’ve performed in absolute terms as well as relative to their benchmark, and consider not only the returns but the level of risk taken to achieve them. The performance history also gives an indication of a managers’ style, showing how they’re likely to perform in different market conditions.

Quantitative work provides vital information but there’s no substitute for meeting managers face to face. Our analysts carry out around 400 fund manager meetings a year. Our status in the industry gives us unrivalled access to the top managers in London, the rest of the UK and around the world.

We quiz managers on their investment process – how they decide which companies to buy and sell and how they form their portfolios. We also drill down to test their knowledge of companies and the wider economy. Also important is the team that supports them and the resources available to them – managing a fund at a large bank is a different proposition to running one at a small boutique.

Ultimately what we’re trying to find out is how they’ve achieved their success, and whether they’re likely to repeat it. Many managers performed strongly in the bull market from 2003-7 but were found wanting during the more testing conditions of the 2008 banking crisis. We’re after those that can stay the course.

We have discounted initial fund charges, typically around 5%, down to nil for our rated funds.

It often takes a number of meetings and many hours of analysis before our team becomes comfortable with a fund. Once we are, our senior advisers cross-examine us about the fund. It is important to convince them of the merits of a fund, as they’re the ones who will be putting it in their clients’ portfolios. From the thousands of funds we look at, only a small number of the very best are awarded our three, four and five star buy ratings.

Even when a fund has been rated the work doesn’t stop. Our analysts continue to meet the manager regularly and monitor performance – even the best managers have bad spells, but sometimes they are an indication of more serious problems. We never forget that it’s your money we’re looking after.
