Make the most of tax breaks

Investing in a tax efficient way means more of your money will go towards your future rather than vanishing in tax.

Pensions are the cornerstone of retirement planning for most people and, in our view should be, because of the generous tax breaks they come with. Find out more about the tax benefits of pensions.

ISAs come with excellent tax breaks too and we believe stocks and shares ISAs have an important role to play in supplementing pensions.

Those who are fully using pension and ISA allowances and are subject to the higher or additional rates of Income Tax might also consider allocating a small amount of their overall investments to VCTs (Venture Capital Trusts).

The value of investments, and the income derived from them, can go down as well as up and you can get back less than you originally invested. Prevailing tax rates and reliefs are dependent on your individual circumstances and are subject to change.

VCTs should be regarded as higher risk investments. They are only suitable for UK resident taxpayers who can tolerate higher risk and have a time horizon of greater than five years. Historical or current yields should not be considered a reliable indicator of future returns, which cannot be guaranteed. Share values and income from them may go down as well as up and you may not get back the amount originally invested. Owing to the nature of their underlying assets, VCTs are highly illiquid. Investors should be aware that they may have difficulty, or be unable to realise their shares at levels close to that that reflect the value of the underlying assets. Tax levels and reliefs may change, and the availability of tax reliefs will depend on individual circumstances.
