Case study: Tina's Story

Tina is just one example of the many thousands of
children and young people that Kids Company works with. Her
experiences are typical of some of the most traumatized and at risk
children and youths that Kids Company deals with whilst the
charity's response is typical of its work.
Tina is a 17 year old girl. She is a highly gifted singer but
since the age of four has had numerous traumatic experiences.
Tina's arm was broken by her mother during a beating, the start of
several violent encounters at home. Tina attempted suicide when she
was 14 and was subsequently taken into care. Her father is a drug
dealer and a criminal. He has relationships with younger girls. Her
brother is in prison and her 15 year old sister is pregnant and
living with her. She remains vulnerable and prone to debilitating
depression.
Kids Company worked to get accommodation when she was homeless.
We accessed a grant of £9,000 to help her finish college and to
support her singing. She receives counseling for her depression and
difficulties and support for her sister.
In the future, we need to help settle her into University. We
need to initiate psychiatric assessment so that she can receive
more medication for her depression and she needs more help to work
on her relationships with her family.
Please note that for reasons of confidentiality Tina's real name
has not been disclosed.
