Bestinvest Charity Football Tournament
Bestinvest hosted a charity football tournament in
London to raise money for Kids Company and Bowel Cancer UK. Two
teams of Bestinvest staff battled it out with teams from Baring,
Investec, Old Mutual, Legg Mason, Henderson and SWIP in a hard
fought competition. The tournament was a resounding success,
raising just under £2000, equivalent to about four times the cost
of organising the event, thanks to the donations made by the
participating companies and Bestinvest staff.
Eight teams battled it out for over 170 minutes of non-stop
football, with a total of thirty nine goals scored in open play,
for the chance to be crowned winner of the inaugural Bestinvest
Charity Football Tournament. The tournament was organised to raise
money for charity, but the level of competition was very high as
was the standard of football.
Bestinvest's A team cruised through the group stage of the
tournament to win their group, with goals from Matt Hodge, Advisor,
(2) and Carl Fiford (3) securing passage to a semi final match
against SWIP. SWIP proved to be a well organised outfit, having
only leaked one goal against Henderson, the eventual tournament
winners. Bestinvest A's tense encounter against SWIP ended in a
goalless draw, but the team proved to have the calmer nerves and
emerged as the winners of the shoot-out. This was in no small part
thanks to the performance of our Head of Compliance, Treldon
Connell, who kept a cool head.
Bestinvest B fared less well in Group 2, struggling against SWIP
(0 - 3) and falling prey to a potent Henderson's team (1 - 5),
despite taking an early lead. Matt Brunwin, Senior Financial
Planning Consultant, struck a superb low drive but Henderson
rapidly turned the game around, scoring five in quick succession to
outclass the home team. There was some consolation for Bestinvest B
in the final game after the team secured a narrow 2-1 victory
against Baring, who struggled to make headway in a tough group.
In the other semi final Henderson saw off a strong Investec side
who had held Bestinvest A to a goalless draw in the group stages.
The 'Zebras' put in a good performance but were outgunned by a
Henderson team that has already won a number of tournaments. In the
final Bestinvest A put up a strong performance against the
Henderson side and the game was by no means one-sided. Aaron
Pittaway from the Operations team was unlucky to miss some good
early chances to take the lead. However, Henderson's experience
again showed through as they won by two goals to lift the trophy.
They were undoubtedly the outstanding team of the tournament having
scored seventeen goals and conceded just three.
