A Sports Day to Remember
A selection of Bestinvest employees recently took
part in the Riverdale Primary School year 9 Sports Day organised by
Kids Company.
The event was organised by Kids Company's Andy Gough and Fiona
Lloyd in order to provide an environment that would allow a
selection of high risk children (children exposed to a high level
of socio-demographic risk) from Riverdale Primary school to channel
their energy in a positive manner.
Throughout the afternoon, the participating children tackled an
assortment of sporting activities ranging from handball to
football. Despite the range of available activities, each sport on
offer was orchestrated by Kids Company to instil certain salient
life skills in the children; leadership, team work and
interpersonal skills.
Although the event was chiefly designed to benefit the children,
Bestinvest's participating employees were left feeling a
considerable level of nostalgia, such was the considerable level of
fun derived from the day's activities.
Taking a break from his investment management role, Nigel
Parsons was one of the participating Bestinvest volunteers that
were left feeling nostalgic at the end of the Sports Day.
"It was great to forget about bulls & bears, inflationary
statistics and jobless numbers and for just one day remember how
carefree it is to be a 7 year old, when the only important thing is
how quickly you can run around the adventure playground or score a
goal past Mr Nigel! - I still don't know where they find their
energy!" admitted Nigel.
"Despite typically British weather the sports day was a complete
success. Our time doesn't cost anything but it is invaluable to the
children as it allows events like this to go ahead. It was
tremendously rewarding to see the children all have a great time
and for them to have access, through the volunteers and the staff
of Kids Company, to positive adult role models."
Without a doubt, the event was a success and allowed the
children to temporarily detach themselves from the issues and
qualms that plague their lives.
For six hours, they were able to revel in the joys of being a
child.
