Bowel Cancer UK is dedicated to saving lives by raising awareness of bowel cancer,
campaigning for best treatment and care and providing practical support and advice.
Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer of men and women in the UK - over
37,500 people are diagnosed and just over 16,000 die of the disease each year; one
person every 30 minutes. However, if diagnosed at the earliest stage, the disease
is very treatable with a survival rate of more than 80% over five years.
Bowel Cancer the UKs leading Bowel Cancer Advisory Service. They are open Monday
to Friday, between 10am and 4pm and the freephone telephone service is staffed by
specialist nurses who can also respond to enquiries by email. Callers can talk in
confidence to their colorectal, stoma care and oncology nurses about all aspects
of bowel cancer and bowel health. Their nurses offer advice on treatment options,
symptoms or information on reducing the risk of bowel cancer.
Another vital aspect of their work is to raise awareness and educate the public
about bowel cancer and its symptoms. They give regular talks to large groups of
people including community groups and workplaces. They provide training to non specialist
healthcare professionals and disseminate information to them, in order to bring
public and voluntary organisations together.
Bowel Cancer UK is a small charity and does not currently receive government funding
or have significant corporate sponsors and we felt we were in a good position to
use our size and distribution to have a really positive impact, through fund raising
and increasing awareness.
