Video: What is Spot the Dog?

This video introduces Spot the Dog, Tilney Bestinvest’s half-yearly selection of the worst-performing funds currently available. Associate Director, Investment Advisory, Sally Merritt explains more about the publication that fund managers would love to ban.

Open the financial section of any weekend newspaper and you will find dozens of articles and adverts for funds that are currently performing well. As encouraging as these can be, the reality is that many funds will disappoint over the long term – either through underperformance, expensive fees or a combination of both.

For over 20 years Tilney Bestinvest has campaigned to raise awareness of those funds that are costing investors money by underperforming. We use detailed statistical analysis to identify the funds that have consistently failed to meet their benchmarks over the long term, before naming and shaming them in our half-yearly Spot the Dog guide.

The value of investments can go down as well as up, and you can get back less than you originally invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future returns. This video does not constitute a personal recommendation or advice to invest.
