Foresight Solar Fund - New rating

This London listed investment company is planning to raise £200 million in October 2013. It will be fully invested at launch in large, operational UK ground-based solar power plants. The fund will seek to pay an annual dividend of 6p from 1 January 2014 that will increase in line with inflation, and targets 7-8% total return per annum to investors.

60% of revenues are guaranteed under the UK's Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) and Feed in Tariff (FIT) regimes, with the remaining 40% exposed to electricity prices. Both revenue streams are long term (up to 25 years) and have built-in RPI linked increments. Solar energy is a comparatively new industry and the experience that the managers have dating back to 2007 counts for much in this nascent sector. Foresight have over £450 million invested in UK-based solar farms and we are supporters of their VCTs.

The UK Government is backing solar as a ‘key technology’ to meet 2020 carbon targets and gives guaranteed payments to solar energy producers under the ROCs and FIT regimes. The cost of solar panels has fallen significantly as a result of increased production. This makes solar energy more profitable and so the UK government is gradually reducing subsidies, usually at the start of each tax year. This does not however affect previously approved solar plants where the level of subsidy is fixed.

We have given the Foresight Solar Fund a new three-star rating and it will appear on our Premier Selection list of recommended funds.

Investment trusts are similar to funds in that they provide a means of pooling your money but they are publicly listed companies whose shares are traded on the London Stock Exchange. The price of their shares will fluctuate according to investor demand and changes in the value of their underlying assets.
