Frequently asked questions

Which investments can I transfer into a Stocks & Shares ISA?

You can transfer funds, ETFs, investment trusts and most UK shares into a Stocks & Shares ISA.

If you currently hold investments outside of an ISA, they can be transferred to us and moved into a Stocks & Shares ISA through a process known as Bed & ISA. This involves selling your investments and buying them again inside your ISA.

Does an ISA transfer affect my ISA allowance?

No. If you have already used your ISA allowance, you can still transfer existing Stocks & Shares ISAs or Cash ISAs to us without losing your existing tax-free benefits. If you haven’t used your allowance, you can transfer your existing plan and your annual allowance will still be available.

How long does an ISA transfer take?

This can vary from provider to provider, but you can rest assured that we will work closely with your current providers to ensure that your ISA transfer is as completed as quickly as possible.

In general, existing ISAs can be moved into your Bestinvest Stocks & Shares ISA in just one week with our new electronic transfers. Faster transfer times mean there is less time spent out of the market. It’s worth noting that some providers still make manual transfers, and these can take up to eight weeks to complete.

Can I transfer my ISA as cash or as stock?

You can transfer your investments as either cash (by selling the investments and transferring the proceeds) or as stock (which is known as an in-specie transfer).

Can I transfer part of an ISA rather than the whole account?

Yes, there is no requirement to transfer the full balance of your ISA. However, if you keep ISAs with several providers you could miss out on some of the benefits of consolidating your investments – such as easier management, less paperwork and potentially lower fees.

Does it cost anything to transfer ISAs to Bestinvest?

No, it’s free to transfer ISAs to Bestinvest. One of the many benefits of consolidating your ISAs in our Stocks & Shares ISA is that we also pay up to £500 for exit fees applied by your existing provider (subject to terms and conditions)*.

*Exit fees may apply if you leave Bestinvest.
